Artist's Statement

Trevor Lingle

Ever since I was little I loved making art. How I got started is a mystery to me. Neither my father or mother had been big in art, but both my sister and I had found an interest in it. Art was the one thing we both connected on and because of that, I delved into it further. Art was a way fro me to express myself in a way that words could not. I continue to look at experiences and things around me in order to find inspiration. If something sticks out to me as interesting then I take a mental note of it to go back to later. I take that idea and manipulate it through art. I manipulate the idea in order to express either a clearer or more direct idea. I want my art to evoke an idea or emotion to the viewer. What the emotion or idea is may change from spectator to spectator, but as long as something comes to the viewer then my mission has been accomplished. I have used ink and watercolor as my primary medium. Through looking at other artists I have developed my own technique. The works are slightly cartoon like with the stand out black lines, but the darker subject matter takes it out of that happy connotation associated with cartoon styles. To this point I have become fond of using watercolor and ink. The way watercolor can blend together freely and the lack of control is a freeing feeling when making a piece. Then there’s the contrast of the generally light watercolor with the deep dark black lines from ink. I use a calligraphy pen to draw in the lines, and details, which are unachievable with watercolor. Then there is acrylic. Acrylic is the blend between control of ink or pencil, and the lack there of with watercolor. Direct vibrant colors can be seen with acrylic, and through the control of the paint more can be achieved in detail that is unattainable with watercolor.

Project 4 proposal

The critique had given me a lot of help when thinking about what I am doing as an artist.  The critique had told me about how to keep a focus and to really blow up that focus making the piece stronger. With keeping the critique in mind, I have decided that I will be exploring the idea of collage but still keep that focal point as I had done with the last project. I really want to have the focus IN YOUR FACE when you look at it. In order to do that like I said, I will have the collage aspect as part of the image and then have the focal point on top. I will also be incorporating the bright toxic looking green into the piece. The work will be mixed media having it be both drawn and painted.  At this time I imagine both pieces being made in this way still having this idea of the decay of the world around us due to our own actions through either industry or pollution.

Project #3 proposal

For project three I will be depicting the effects on the marine life due to the contamination into the water and our oceans. The projects will be primarily painted with a dark feel to them and will be made to convey a strong political message that hopes to make the viewer think about it with almost a shock factor but also to agitate a curious feeling about it.
